This past Saturday, November 18th, the 10th annual EdCampNJ was held at New Brunswick High School. Our free unconference brought together passionate educators from across New Jersey for a day of teacher-led professional development. Based on feedback, the 2023 edition was another major success.
As attendees entered New Brunswick High School on Saturday morning, anticipation and excitement were palpable. Breakfast and an opening message from the EdCampNJ team set the stage for a day filled with inspiration and peer learning. Teachers then proposed and created sessions happening in real-time, ensuring topics were timely and relevant. Over 36 sessions were held throughout the morning, on everything from social-emotional learning to utilizing AI in classrooms.
During sessions, attendees drove the conversations, shared ideas and resources, and made connections. As one 2023 participant put it, "The ability to speak freely with other teachers and gain ideas and advice is so valuable." Others appreciated the "game-changing" AI discussions and learning immediate applications for their classrooms. The crowdsourced format means educators walk away with strategies they can implement right away.
The 2023 event built on EdCampNJ's mission to facilitate authentic teacher-led PD. One of the most meaningful aspects is connecting with fellow passionate educators across New Jersey. Whether in sessions, during networking breaks, or at lunch, this year's event fostered meaningful relationships. Attendees always leave inspired by the community of teachers united in pursuing impactful learning.
Based on glowing survey feedback, EdCampNJ 2023 was an overwhelming success. Almost 100% of respondents said the event was well-organized and 94% rated the impact on their professional development as high. EdCampNJ continues to set the standard for teacher-powered, relevant PD that equips educators to meet the opportunities and challenges of today's landscape.
Education is a continuous journey of growth, learning, and collaboration. As we approach a significant milestone, EdCamp New Jersey is thrilled to celebrate its 10th Anniversary, marking a decade of nurturing a community of educators committed to their professional development. As a district leader, I enjoyed hearing multiple perspectives from my colleagues across the state at EdCampNJ. At EdCampNJ, I was able to listen to the perspectives of student teachers, newer teachers, veteran teachers, department chairs, principals, consultants, media specialists, and more. EdCampNJ allowed me to learn and grow from leaders at every level in many schools across New Jersey. When you enter EdCampNJ, you leave your title at the door, and become a connected educator, learner, and friend. In 2022, I was able to attend sessions on supporting aspiring administrators, using Canva in the classroom (and for district media), using apps and extensions for workplace efficiency, Career and Technical Education (CTE) information, and developing classroom community.
All of this information is immediately helpful to me, and I already have started using and sharing what I've learned. It was a great opportunity to share open conversations about working conditions, professional needs, and ideas for professional growth in a safe, democratic space.
I am looking forward to attending EdCampNJ again in 2023 and hope you will too!
